Cost Benefit Analysis

Before you hire a lawyer and go legal, assess the costs of doing so and the likelihood of success, which is winning the case AND being paid. Read through the agreements you signed, to figure out what law and which courts apply. It might be possible to claim your money through the EU small claims system, if so that would be better than going through the formal court system. And assess the creditworthiness of the company.
You could also consider suing the regulator for not responding to your messages and failing to protect you.
If it is anything less than 1000 EUR, writing it off is likely the best option, and depending on creditworthiness, bigger amounts may still be proper write-offs.
Best if you decide to take action is probably to hire a lawyer with an agreed cap on the fees. That way you will get practical advice without facing a potentially huge bill.
