The basic question is: how are you going to win this game?
You were looking to win the game by hitting a shot left from one of the spares on the 8, 6, or 5 points. This is misguided. White is flexible enough that his position is going to get better before it gets worse, and you give him a good way to get out of cleaning up the blot on the 16 point (by pointing on or priming the checker on the 2 pt).
What you should have been looking at is how best to contain the checker on the 16 point from getting to safety, playing against the opponent's midpoint, maintaining flexibility and keeping the race as a backup option. 5 pips isn't much.
