Isn't there a 'standard' bg board shape?!

Just put all the extra info, pipcount, and buttons beside the board instead of above it. That way they could expand the board vertically, all the way to the top of the screen. The entire board would still be visible.

The android app for GameColony online backgammon is the only android BG app I've come accros that does it this way.

I guess it's just my pet peeve, and no one else's.
