Isn't there a 'standard' bg board shape?!

I'm not the developer of Backgammon Mobile, so if you're trying to submit a suggestion for their app, I'm not the right person. I was just giving you a general idea of why backgammon apps are the way they are.

Even if an app chose to use the entire vertical space to make a square board with a menu on the side, there would still be a lot of horizontal space leftover on a device such as the Samsung Galaxy S4, which has a resolution of 1920x1080. Most people would want this leftover space used to make the board wider and easier to interact with. That's why you need to get a device that's as close to square as possible if you prefer to have a square board.
