As a practical matter, your advice is sound. For me the choice with opening 43 is always between D and Z. Even though S may fare well at certain scores—DMP is a “for-instance”—it never demonstrates the kind of decisive advantage that would make me want to memorize the circumstances.

Technically speaking, however, I think David has got you. His rollouts demonstrate that S is competitive at certain scores. At those scores, number (2) above describes my attitude: “although [I have my preference,] any reasonable play seems OK.”
