The explanation may seem long, but the actual computation OtB takes at most 15-20 seconds. Do you really think one needs a calculator or a piece of paper to perform that trivial computation?

I will not rely on "common sense" alone in a position where a direct computation is possible. There are plenty of other decisions where I might throw away a bunch of equity. But not on this one.

P.S. Lateral thinking in backgammon races?..
