I'm a foreigner. How is GPA calculated? Is it possible to get this grade point average from taking easy exams? Is 3.9 good? whats the average? Why would a 3.9 from Stanford be better than a 3.9 from CatDog College? Isnt the GPA system standardized?

I realize I could look it up, but for the benefit of any other foreigner on this board who doesnt understand the education system in the US, this would be helpful.

It also seems odd that just about everyone has a 'college' degree from somewhere. Doesnt that devalue the degree part?
