Stanford is an elite institution.

Gpa's are typically on a 4.0 scale, sometimes 4.3 (A+, at schools that differentiate between an A and an A+). C =2.0, B=3.0, A=4.0

Some US schools work on a different system but the 4.0 (or 4.3) probably covers 95+% of colleges.

At Columbia, where I went and which is probably of the same general level of academic rigor as Stanford, I recall that the average gpa of a liberal arts (easier than engineering) was a 3.4. At Columbia, of course, we have the "core curriculum", which forces students to take some courses they might not be as capable in as in other courses they might otherwise select if given a choice. Perhaps without the core the average might have been a 3.5 or even a 3.6.

A 3.9 is still pretty good. You can't be an idiot and get out of Stanford with a 3.9.... Even of you were given a boost with some of your grades because you were a prominent student-athlete (think about the time consumed with practice, weights, games, etc. with which student-athletes must contend relative to non-athletes). Eventually you have to take some more challenging courses to complete your major. Perhaps 50% of his courses could have been "gut" classes (easy A's / 4.0, which, mind you, not everyone gets, nonetheless). But the other half probably had class averages of 3.3-3.5 (B+ to just under an A-), which means if he were straight average in the easiest major and got a slight boost, he'd still have been above average.

Stanford's students' mean SAT score was about 2200, placing the average student in the top 3% of test takers. While there is some argument about what the SAT actually means, it is commonly accepted as something of an IQ test. Regardless, the average student at Stanford is in the top 3% of SAT (taken by virtually every American high school senior) takers.

He had an above average gpa at Stanford. You could construct a weak argument that estimates his IQ.
