It seems to happen (through having played it out) less when you don't hit... Any 6 gives him freedom to play that you don't want to give him... Often by avoiding the hit, he is able to maintain the use of those 4 checkers. Often, oddly, it ende up being the 2 and 3 points that were maintained.
