As long as we are being lexiphanic, I actually be the proper term when you play a single game of backgammon, is "single game." You are either playing a series of games, or a match, or you are playing a single game.
Now, you can play many single games in a session, and it might be okay to call it "single games" but I have always preferred the term "single game" because the entire theory of the competition is that everything you do only affects that one game. The fact that you might play several of them is not different than the fact that you might play several matches. We don't call it "Matches play" do we?
