Chouette double taking question - in NY

In all NY chouettes, of which I am aware (not a small number), the team gets to decide, in order, who gets the points and who plays. Also, in NY, you do not have to beat the captain to retain the box - only win the game and at least break even. The reason for the team choosing? Why should the captain not be able to chose to benefit from the drop if it's a bad drop or the take if it's a bad take?
