It is more an intuitive feeling than anything else. But part of it is not having a clear model about where the strength difference is coming from. For example, if it is checker play, then it is also important to include that as part of the remaining play in the game; if it is in the cube action, then that should also somehow be part of the cube decisions down the line.

Now you have an assumption of perfect play by the underdog in the present game, and imperfect play in next games, reflected in the MET - logical that you overestimate the chances of the underdog if you put more points at stake under perfect play conditions.
