"I think a 7 point match with Crawford starting at 2a/2a would require far more skill than a 9 point match played normally. I think the checker play decisions in the last few games would be quite complex.
But let's say you are right and the total skill tradeoff is a wash."
I never opined it would be a wash. I think the better player's advantage is greater in a 9 point match than it is in a 7 point match with your suggested rule.
The 9 point match will have about 2 more games on average. The most number of games that will result from your rule is 2 and that requires that the match get to exactly 2a 2a (25%?) then a non gammon occurs (75%?), then the trailer wins a single game (35?). That is about 1 out of 16 matches. The checker play complexities you speak of would need to be significant to overcome that. But the 2nd game would be GS/GG. Everyone has plenty of experience with that. The 2a 2a game would be the only thing new but is just a cubeless game with each player having an elevated gammon value. Can you give some examples of positions where checker plays are quite complex due to your rule?
As another comparison note that the extra games due to your rule will be cubeless games compared to the additional games of playing to a larger score being cubeful games. Even if there are added checker play complexities cube complexities have been removed.
