Good observation. Imagine that there are 10 players and 8 tournaments. Two of the ten players attend all eight tournaments. Each of the other 8 players attends exactly one tournament—for simplicity, say that each one attends a different tournament.

Then 80% of all players attend only one tournament. However, at any given tournament, 2/3 of the players attend 8 tournaments.

It would be interesting to work out whether this sort of phenomenon holds with a more realistic attendance distribution like a Zipfian distribution.
