What Jake says here was my experience as well. Back when there were no bots, it was much more difficult to be close to sure what the correct checker play was in many somewhat complex positions.

Jake, "But I remember a World Cup in 1996 where a group of famous experts who I won't shame by naming did not know the takepoint for 10-away, 2-away."

Hmm..maybe I didn't play that one (might have had to work) or I wasn't around when you asked.

Anyhow, things were worse a decade prior. I recall at a Plimpton Cup in Vegas c.1983, hearing a discussion between the game's "best" about a match oriented cube. I was asked what I thought, and when I went into a discussion about take point (the game would be match decisive for once side after double and auto recube) I got a bunch of stunned looks. I then went thru the method to calculate it and a couple of those "experts" shrugged their shoulders and walked away, whereas out of the others who tried to understand, only Billy Horan was able to get the gist of it and why it was such a blunder to cube AtS. (PS the cube was passed OTB in the masters event).
