I like the idea of splitting into groups and playing down to see who advances out of the group. Here is an added wrinkle that might create some extra excitement.

  1. You have four groups and just one player from each group gets to advance to the playoffs. The playoffs are straight elimination.

  2. The prize money is distributed: 1/3 to the winner of the finals and 1/6 to the loser of the finals.

  3. What about the other half the the prize money? Another 1/3 is split among all the players in the group that the winner came from, and the last 1/6 is split among the players in the group that the runner-up came from.

Everyone has a stake in the playoffs and will have someone to cheer for. Could be a lot of fun!
