I like the idea of experimenting with a tournament split into groups, where the groups having a rooting interest in the outcome of their winners, but think the group prize money should be distributed within each group based on each players percentage of matches won within the group. That way it would still be based on performance. I don't think money paid to each group should vary more than 100%. Maybe the portion of the prize fund going to the groups could be distributed: 6/16 for the group represented by the winner of the tournament, 4/16 to the group represented by the finalist, and 3/16 to each of the groups represented by the semifinalists.

One huge disadvantage is the work it would take the TD to make all the payouts. Keeping track of the amount due each player would be simple to code.

An advantage of this format is that more people would cash and more would have a reason to stay around for the finals on Sunday.
