Please forgive me for raining on your parade again, but I am considerably less enthusiastic about this suggested format than most of the others who've replied.

For starters I don't like the sports league concept of breaking a large number of players into small groups that are played down to a winner(s) who advance to the playoffs. Small groups are difficult to deal with and will result in many byes.

You won't have an ideal number of players like 64 most of the time. With 64 you could have 8 groups of 8 and run a DE in each group and then the 8 finalists can play off to the winner. But how this is much different from a more normal double or triple elimination format isn't evident to me.
