Truncated matches?

When I used to run chess tournaments I remember there were situations involving unfinished matches where, for pairing purposes only obviously, you would treat one player as having won and the other player as having drawn. The idea being that you don't want to reward someone with an easier pairing because they played an overlong match. So in backgammon, if one player is ahead maybe you'd give them 1 point and the other player 1/2 point.
The only problem with translating this concept to backgammon is that since there are no actual draws, the player(s) you assign 1/2 point to will be the only ones in their score group (i.e. no one else in the event will have 2.5 wins.)
