Phil,
You would be surprised how few top players are willing to participate on the World side. You might think that the prestige of being able to play on such a team would have Giants falling all over themselves to sign up; but the truth is quite different.
Having discussed this issue with a number of European pros, I can report to you that they all, in the ordinary course of things, avoid the Nordic like the plague. There is no added money, the general level of play is very high, there is no juicy side action, and the cost of accomodation is steep. The whole proposition, to these advantage players, is "negative equity."
Given that none of these pros have the least desire to attend the Nordic, they simply view the World v Denmark as an additional expense. This side event has no added money (though it should!) and takes two extra days to play with two or more training days to prepare (hotel for at least four extra nights). These guys are realistic enough to understand that it would be delusional to believe that our team, no matter how it was picked, would have more than the slightest edge against the Danes.
In short: for most of these Giants, the motto is: no edge, no play. Although many were asked, the members of the World team are those who (motivated by non-financial considerations) accepted their invitations.
