When a single checker makes the entire move (without hitting mid-journey), the higher of the two numbers rolled is played first for purposes of determining that move’s family.

One exception is noted above. When you need to make (or avoid) a hit, you can play the smaller die first. Another exception occurs when the high die is blocked. Examples of both are given below.
