Thanks for chiming in, Nack. Your explanations are at least as good as mine, and often much better. I think readers benefit by hearing the story told in our two voices.

We are going to have to agree to disagree, however, on this one. Since I began adding the phrase when they are moved in a play to my descriptions, I have noticed that there is less confusion on the point than there was before. It makes it nearly impossible to gloss over the issue because you are reading quickly or casually.

Redundancy is a trick I learned back when I was teaching computer science at a local community college. In a large audience, you cannot depend on your listeners to catch every nuance of a succinct explication. The majority will usually be with you, but when you are trying to reach everyone, that is not enough. In this case, we have two of the most assiduous nactators I know, David Rockwell and Igor Erovenko, who both finally understood this detail when it was presented with the extra verbiage.
