Using the Doubling Cube in a Non-Turn Based Game

Suppose you are playing a game of chance that progresses along in discrete increments until one side or the other hits 100% winning probability. You would like to introduce the doubling cube to play so that at the end one of any of these discrete increments, a player with access to the cube may double.

The question is: If the cube is still in the middle after a given increment, what happens if both players want to double? (In a turn-based game like backgammon, we never encounter this issue).

I have several ideas for a set of rules to address this situation, but would be curious to first hear some thoughts from others.
