For all 5 roll+ positions (excluding trivial ones like 1-2-pt. stacks) I just use Keith Count, but adjust for bad distribution on high points - typically when there is a high gap with few checkers on the points over it. I'd just add +2-3 pips for the top player here. It's a "by feel" thing and wouldn't deal with a close decision precise enough, but is enough to easily avoid big mistakes like the one here.
