I'm confused. Before players engage In the attack/defense scenario they must each announce how many dice will be used to attack or defend. It sounds like as the defender you are suggesting you get to see the attacker's roll before you decide how many dice to roll. If this is the case you aren't playing by the rules.

If the above isn't the case then the answer is simple, you always defend with as many dice as possible. (2)
