When there are many armies left for each side I would determine how many armies are lost on average and then compare the choices of 1 die or 2 dice to that. For example if you lose .1 armies per attack then rolling two dice with expected value of .06 armies lost is better than rolling 1 die with expected value of .04 armies lost. Compared to future attacks you are doing 2 x (.1 - .06) = .08 better than average with 2 dice and are doing .1 - .04 = .06 better with a single die. I am not sure that the impact of rolling 2 dice is exactly twice as much though.
I have little interest in working out the details.
