Branching off from the subject.

As winners of the round robin Italy had the right to play the 3rd or 4th finisher in the semi final. It's an interesting option, and one I've come across before, I believe (Rugby League) - but something doesn't seem right about it (to me). If you've finished 3rd it seems to me that you have the right to play those finishing 2nd in the semi final, and not have to face the top seed. Even more so here, where the seeding position is based upon an actual competition result (preliminary round robin), rather than a possibly subjective assessment by a committee. It seems right (to me) that second and third best should vie for a place in the final.

Of course, in tennis, 3rd and 4th seeds are randomly allocated to either side of the draw!
