It's strange to me that you think 'memory experts' would prevail simply because they're memory experts. You act like there aren't backgammon players with at least plus plus, pun intended, average memories. In general I would call my own memory pretty terrible however I've always been able to remember things that interest me pretty damn well. You take Jake Jacobs or Nack Ballard and enter them in this contest they not only don't have to memorize the thousands of positions that they already know because they're backgammon players but they also have damn fine memories to boot! This isn't even touching on how mnemonists tend to memorize things and I don't think it's well suited for backgammon positions.
You started with 'I would expect memory experts to clean the clock of any backgammon player.' and have already toned it down to 'I still think that the memory experts would win.... I still think you're wrong, even if we did omit all the easy rolls. There's a finite amount of information to memorize and I just believe some backgammon players can do it too. We should put up a an anonymous poll for the BGO readers and see what they think. Yes, I'm too lazy to do it myself atm.
I meant to mention earlier that I imagine your statement As an analogy, note that the world-record holders for most consecutive successful free throws or three-pointers are not particularly good basketball players. is true because basketball players that are exceptional players don't care about these kinds of records. I doubt Steve Nash or Stephen Curry have ever given this any thought.
