Chouette question ( or a case of premature ejection)

We were playing our Wednesday night, chicken wing fueled chouette when we ran into the following problem;

Before the Captain rolled, one of his crew shouted out double, WITHOUT putting out his cube.

Before the box could answer, the Captain rolled. It is a nominally friendly chouette and the problem was sorted relatively amicably. But the question arose as to what should be the correct outcome here.

I see 5 possibilities;

The roll should be negated and all should be allowed to double.

The roll should be negated and only the original doubler should be allowed to double.

The roll should be negated and all EXCEPT the Captain should be allowed to double.

The roll should count and the double can be taken or dropped according to the box's whim.

The roll should count and the double ignored.

I've asked a decent spectrum of players and had a number of responses which also adds a 6th option; I don't know.

I'd be interested to know what the forum thinks.

Would there be a difference if the player had physically put out his cube.
