Keeping the running count is ideal. If you do it like driving a bicycle - with no excess energy, you have a great asset. i have not mastered that and I have problems with backgames. the mental shifting method added by cluster counting helps a lot but I should continue keeping the running count thereafter to make life easier. One has to use the opponent time to practice counting. It helps a lot.
