ii and iii have bitten me more than once. These are even true when playing unclocked.

The better you are the more valuable the following advice (relayed to me by Frank Frigo) is:

After considering all reasonable candidates, if you're still undecided and one of the remaining options was your first instinct, choose that one and end your turn.
