I don't see how you can say it's easier to remember than the alphabet, given that none of us are in danger of forgetting the alphabet.

You're comparing apples and bananas. The task isn't to memorize the alphabet; it's to quickly learn and be able to recall which symbol represents which point. Mnemonics work well for this. That's why there is such a thing.

But I think the question is whether we are designing a system to allow people like ourselves to take down the moves of an ongoing game as quickly as possible, or if we are looking to invent a system that works for the masses.

I think DASH does a pretty good job at both, and I thought others might like to try it and see if it works for them, You're, of course, free to use whichever system you like.
