I don't know how many other letters of the alphabet have convenient subs or if using Latin letters might cause unusual problems; perhaps Chase or someone can elaborate.

Most letters have multiple "subs," for both upper and lower case. I did a quick check and all the letters in BEACON are represented. If a certain letter is not represented, there are plenty of other characters to choose from. If you open up the Character Map utility, I think you'll have an easy time spotting a suitable sub for just about anything you're looking for.

The set of Latin characters seems to be standard across the typical fonts one would use or see on a Windows system. I'd be surprised if this consistency didn't carry over unto other operating systems. Certain custom fonts will sometimes remap characters for their own purposes (for example, the fonts that come with Snowie), but you'd have to go in and intentionally alter your file manager to force it to use one of these fonts for this to be an issue. I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that.
