As you surely know, studying will improve your results, but it may not improve your results by as much as you would like. That's the nature of the game, and you have to decide whether you can live with that.
If you're playing the same opponents repeatedly, my first question is whether you're studying your opponents as much as you're studying the technicalities of the game. Given the description of your opponents, I suspect that studying your opponents is at least as important as technical skill. When you're handling the cube, are you thinking more about the position itself or more about what your opponent's likely reaction will be? Both should be in your mind.
Another thing to consider is whether you can get your opponents to play chouettes with you. I find that a skill advantage manifests itself even more clearly in a chouette. That is, as long as you yourself master the psychology of chouette play.
