Because making the 5pt gives up the 8pt, which is a large concession, and exposes an advanced checker to a direct 6 shot, risking getting a fourth checker sent back. AtS, the extra gammon loses hurt me, which makes me lean slightly toward hitting. At DMP, gammons don't count, so it's worth taking more risks to secure good assets. That makes me lean back toward making the 5pt, but as I said, I find this a tough position to understand, so I may be wrong on both accounts.
