Even if we take Stick's words literally, note that he said, "by and large," not "always."

Here are some standard examples where the DMP play is not the same as the many-away-many-away.

Match to 1, Tied at 0-0

At DMP we just play 7/6 7/2 and hope to get a shot. At many-away-many-away we have to run off the backgammon with 24/18. More generally at a many-away-many-away score, we have to worry about when to start running off the gammon in a desperate holding game, whereas at DMP we can just sit back calmly and build our board as we wait for a shot.

This is from Kit Woolsey's Five Point Match article. At DMP we simply run with 20/10(2). At many-away-many-away it's better to blitz with 9/4*(2) 6/1*(2) for the gammons.

This one is from an old post of mine. At DMP, the bold 13/10 8/4* is best, going all-out for the counter-prime, but 13/10 8/4* is a whopper at many-away-many-away because it loses too many gammons.

This one is from Stick's old DMP quiz. At DMP the super-safe 7/6(3) 1/off is correct. The race is nearly a lock and above all we want to minimize shots. At many-away-many-away we should hit and cover trying to win a gammon. In general, bearing off at DMP tends to be pretty easy because you should just play as safely as possible, whereas at many-away-many-away it can sometimes be tricky to decide whether an aggressive bearoff play wins enough extra gammons to warrant the risk.
