The only book i have right now, is The Backgammon Book (Jacoby and Crawford). And quite honestly, i find it to be a little overwhelming at times. Every sentence carries deep meaning! There is not a wasted word in the book. I've read the book, dozens of time, referred to it thousands of times, and now having gained an introduction to the game, i can read one paragraph, my eyes glaze over, and I can see the hundreds or thousands of hours of work to really comprehend the consequences of the concepts. I'm retired, and have that sort of time and interest to put into learning the game. I rarely read a whole chapter anymore. A single paragraph sends me to the computer to explore the ideas a little deeper.
I agree that books are great. They introduce us to new ways of thinking, and concepts that we might never stumble upon, otherwise. I do know that my learning is much deeper if i 'do the work' myself. It's absolutely critical.
Mr. Ballard has posted an excellent article, here... http://www.gammonlife.com/writers/nack_ballard_early_doubles_backgammon_article_1.htm
...and i can see that much thought is given to the opponents possible replies. That is yet another skill which needs development....siiiiiiiiiiigh :)
