Well, if you really want to pursue this idea, then I think Bob Koca's suggestion is on the right track. Collect some data to test your theory. A good indicator that the bot doesn't understand a position is if it changes its mind on different evaluation/rollout levels. (Of course it's possible for the bot to be consistently wrong on all levels, so consistency isn't necessarily an indicator that the bot understands a position, but inconsistency is certainly a sign that it doesn't understand.) So collect some data about the variation for (a) positions you think it understands, (b) positions that you know it doesn't understand, and (c) positions you're worried about. Then compare.
