This is just another example of someone trying to "game the rules"rather than winning at backgammon -- and this should always be punished.

In this instance, it seems very plain that the roller made technical errors costing himself some amount of not-too-consequential time on the clock and now is trying to capitalize on his own improper play to nullify a bad roll. I would expect the TD to look at him incredulously as he told this story and immediately begin weighing whether to disqualify him from the tournament for being a sleaze-bag.

Even if you really wanted to take his argument seriously, you could award him back the estimated amount of time he lost, but of course you would now allow him to dial back his anti-joker.

Isn't this the sort of thing that shows that it's impossible to create, as though in cold computer code, a complete set of explicit instructions on the rules and what the consequence should be for every situation? Some people (not saying you're among them -- this is a good scenario to explore!) seem to want to argue that if rules can't be spelled out explicitly to the last eventuality, there shouldn't be rules at all. Cheaters will always find novel ways to cheat. TD's carry the burden of dealing with such situations and meeting out appropriate punishments.
