There is surely a more important reason as to why most players, it seems, would still like to use a real board to a cyber one, and it's described with perfect eloquence by Danny Kleinman on p.2 of 'Vision Laughs At Counting...':
"One element of the appeal of backgammon to its new devotees became apparent immediately: this was a sensuous game. The players sat at burnished wood tables inset with cork or velveteen playing surfaces over which they slid smooth alabaster checkers. Sometimes marbling of the red, green, brown or ivory checkers enhanced the lush visual effect. When they weren't moving the pieces, the backgammon players shook their dice rhythmically in thick-lipped leatherette cups. Then they rolled the dice from these cups onto the tables. Alternatively, they might fling the dice through a maze-like vertical contraption called a "baffle-box". In either case, the dice tumbled with sonorous rattling, bounced, rolled and spun, and came to rest gradually. Even the dice themselves were finely machined with uniformly beveled corners and inlaid pips, and of a variety of translucent colors through which light filtered delicately."
Sadly, they don't seem to write 'em like that anymore.
