Sorry to further shave an already fine point, but the rule you refer to as well as others are being offered in support of the poster's position.

According to the rules, completion of play occurs when the player punches the clock; it follows that if a player picks up the dice and rolls before his op punches the clock he is in clear breach of the rules. It also follows for a fair case to be made that until (as in this case) the timed out player punches his clock all of his rolls and moves are legal. It is only after he punches the clock that his serial rolls/plays become illegal.

Fact is he timed out through no fault but his own, and the matter of his op not reminding him drops to between secondary and academic.
