Exhaustion Take 2 - Headphones

The new USBGF rule states:
Listening devices for music or noise cancelling are allowed unless the opponent or Director objects.
This thread somehow made me wonder something.: Are ear-plugs similarly ban-able?? What about a pair of sound mufflers like you'd wear on a shooting range? These aren't "listening" devices - they are anti-hearing devices.
So, if someone banned Carter from wearing his music headphones, could he just whip out a handy pair of silicone ear plugs and flip him the bird?
Barring people from wearing ear-plugs would seem to me a really strange measure in any competitive activity that doesn't require auditory interactions. And if plugs wouldn't be barred, then banning music that is inaudible to the opponent just seems pointless and petty.
I happen to share Rich Munitz's sense that jovial over-the-board conversation (within limits) is a positive part of playing live backgammon. But if an opponent prefers stony silence, you can't force him to chat -- and if they want to 'tune out' completely by wearing 'phones I don't see how that hampers my ability to compete. This just really seems like a solution in search of a problem.
