The problem with puck possession, even in the offensive zone is that it won't last very long. Perhaps they could play keep away for as much as 10 seconds in the offensive zone but then what? Certainly they will be pressured within several seconds. If they pass the puck back out of the zone, it cannot come back into the zone until all their players exit the offensive zone or it will be offsides.

This wasn't a penalty kill situation where they could shoot the puck back to a D-man in their own end and then shoot it back down the ice where pressured as that would be icing.

The risks of playing keep away in hockey are great as you can lose the puck to any funny bounce or poke check or whatever. The gains are only a few seconds. The best thing the B's could do with that puck was to try to put it into the Hawk's net, basically clinching the game.
