I've done that many times (for reasons that have nothing to do with backgammon). It's never been a problem except for exceptionally high ceilings. They're not keen on any sort of cloth since burning the property down is a hassle.

Alternately, you could bring an extendable light-bulb changer pole. (They cost about twenty bucks.) If hotel management asks, you didn't hear it from me.
