I really like this idea.

My feeling from talking to open-level players and reading responses here is that people do not want to travel to play in a tournament only to still play on a laptop/gridgammon/etc. They also apparently do not want to spend any additional time to notate matches, even on a custom-made electronic device that would make this simple.

If there was a tablet say about 4 times the size of an ipad, I can see this becoming the tournament standard. If players wanted, they could always roll dice the old fashioned way off to the side of the tablet. The future generation of tablets will be roll-up devices with larger screens that would work perfectly for this.
