The winner of Monte Carlo is not the world champion. The winner of Monte Carlo is the winner of the "world championships", which simply happens to be the title of that tournament.

A tournament in which fewer than half of the best players play and which has no qualifiers can hardly crown a world champion.

I just held the Super World Championships. Only I participated. I won. I am now the Super World Champion!!!! I have trademarked the name "Super World Championships". Please don't hold an Ultra World Championships.

Maybe I'm just playing with words here.... If everyone called an orange an apple then it would be an apple, even though it wasn't.
