In Response To: Istanbul tournament - FT system (michael smith)

My name is Mustafa ALTUNTAS. I am a board member of ISTAVDER bg association who is responsible from foreign affairs and education. I will try explain what we try to do for bg, on behalf of ISTAVDER’s president Fuat ERDAG and the board members.

Please have a look at what ISTAVDER 6th Anniversary Tournament video before reading the rest of my post. “Showing is better than telling” most of the time :

First of all, we would like to thank to all of the players who attend our tournament. ISTAVDER has started these anniversary tournament series with only two foreign players Falafel and Orlowski. This year we had 45 players from usa, israel, greece, goergia, russia, iran, england, bulgaria, poland, norway, crotia, Germany and cyprus. The rest of the players are from Turkey which makes a total of 270 players. When we talk about players from Turkey, you should consider that the country is geographically much larger than many European countries. We hope that they had fun not only during the tournament but also in the closing ceremony concert and cocktails.

Many players attend the tournament from other cities of Turkey and other branches of Turkey Backgammon Association :

www.tavla.org.tr

Due to the high number of attendance many local tv channels inclunding CNN has visited the tournament and bg was on TV which is very nice for the future events.

ISTAVDER’s main mission is to establish a formal bg federation in Turkey and all over the world. BG deserves to have a federation like chess and bridge. Therefore, ISTAVDER has helped other branches in Turkey to establish their own bg associations.

In this tournament there were two directors. Mr. Cenk Corbacioglu managed the main event and Mr. Ali Cetin Belene managed the side events. Mr. Yalkın ERK managed the doubles where 2x64 teams (can be world record??) played. Other than these responsible members, there were many referees and more than 20 staff members who were volunteered to help. All of the matches are played in the high quality ball room of the WOW Hotel. Finals are played in a separated small room in very quiet environment for players not to get distracted. In all of the matches clock was used. All of the matches was played by using high quality fmgammon bg boards.

Now, I want to answer comments on tournament director issue and the FT system used during the tournament.

Mr. Fuat ERDAG has spend more than 15.000€ for this tournament. He also found sponsors who have donated 20.000$ prize pool. As you may know he is in the giant list. He won many international tournaments. He and his partner has won the doubles in Monte Carlo. He loves to play bg. As he was not the director of the tournament and the staff was well organized, he had the opportunity and time to play in the tournament. However, Cenk and Ali did not play in the tournament or side events. (According to his match and tournament records Ali is better than most of the players in the world). Before the tournament Fuat has declared that he was not going to take any prize if he makes a degree in tournament. After the tournament he has donated his prize to the next year’s tournament. Fuat has dealed with not only our guests but also all of the details and was able to play!

During the tournament we used our FT tournament system :

http://www.ftbgsystem.com/tl/470

The source code is written by Ali Alcelik. We can make any development as we like. We can make the draws randomly or can make swiss like. We can give the BYE to the lowest player or the best player. The system can easily be modified and tested many times. Whatever the draw method chosen we declare it before the tournament and DO NOT CHANGE it during that tournament. You do not have to search for your opponent. You get an SMS message on your phone or can check the web site from any internet location or from the big screens located in the tournament room. You just go to your table number at the given time. We had almost no conflict between the players during the tournament. 16 rounds have been played until the tournament was finished.

When the number of players is ODD, one player has to have a BYE for that round. In this tournament 270 players attended and 16 rounds played. There were only 9 BYEs given. Even if you have the BYE, you still have to WIN to be the champion. Think of a tournament where you use the traditional tournament system 110 players attended. 46 players get a BYE in the first round. Personally, if had won my last match, I would have a BYE and was able to won minimum 5000$ and maximum of 100004, instead of 500$! Last years champion Pavriz from IRAN has become champion without having a BYE and he had to won 8 consequtive matches. Having BYE is good for one round but not enough to become the champion.

FT system is really good and can be more developed by the help of bg community. We are open to any comments and recommendations. Anyone can use the system for free by getting a username.

Next year we will try to have more sponsors and double the prize pool. There will be more surprizes. Hope to see our friends in Istanbul playing at a bigger tournament.

Best Regards.

ISTAVDER
