There's a big difference from where I sit in Jerry Grandell, who as far as I know does nothing any more with backgammon, and Nack Ballard who we know regularly looks at and analyzes backgammon at least. I don't think either player should be considered active for the Giants list for eg but if I was inviting any of them to come out of *retirement* for such an event I believe Nack would be light years (or many bots) ahead of Grandell.

There's no harm in asking esp. way ahead of time. Having any player who has been dormant show up would not only create the buzz of them being there but will give them ample time to practice for the event and might even rope them back into the backgammon world.
