In Response To: related question-more specific to backgammon (phil simborg)

In my gamesplaying experience I have noticed that most players are poor "defenders". That is, as Phil pointed out, they do not play as well in positions where they stand clearly worse as in advantageous positions. One of the reasons may be they view defending inferior positions as a painful task. I have seen some players resign a gammon when they have two or more checkers closed out. They are willing to forfeit sizable remaining equity just to end the pain. "Money saved is the same as money earned." - Poker expert Mike Caro.

Of course there are other players who are "heroic defenders". In chess there are certain players who seem to thrive in very gruesome-looking positions and are very successful in saving the draw, if not turning the game around and actually winning it.
