There are different kinds of even or equal positions in chess. Some are so "dry" or clearly drawn that even a much weaker player will have no trouble holding the draw against a player rated several hundred Elo points higher. However, at the other end of the spectrum, there are many other positions which are assessed as "equal" but are very difficult to play for either side.
Half a pawn advantage is not that big and most of the time the defender should be able to draw, especially at the world-class level. In chess, unlike backgammon, it's almost impossible to play (or find) the move regarded as the top choice by a bot on a consistent basis unless it's virtually forced. I suppose the best chess players would have a very high error rate according to a bot assessment. I can only imagine the amount of pawns or equity they think human players squander away.
